So How About a Green Wedding?
Krista Dunk

Planning a wedding sometime soon? Are you also excited about the eco-friendly movement? Many couples and supporting family members are interested in knowing more about how they can create “green” weddings. Here is an excerpt from our upcoming green weddings eBook:

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Your wedding is one of the most important events you’ll plan for in your lifetime. Because you’re reading this information, we assume your desire is to create

the wedding of your dreams with as little negative environmental impact as possible. There are quite a few things you can do to create an excellent, “green” wedding and we’ll be here to assist your efforts.

You’ve heard the traditional wedding saying, “Something old–something new. Something borrowed–something blue”. We feel that saying is very applicable to “green” weddings.

In all of the major wedding categories, e.g. photography, bridal clothing, catering, etc., there are specific ideas and things to think about to achieve an eco-friendly event. Even your planning phase itself has things to take into consideration. In the wedding decorations and floral section, we discuss general thoughts and very specific ideas you can implement. For example (another eBook excerpt):

Will you be using an aisle runner? Give fabric runners away to someone else for re-use afterward, or borrow one from someone else’s wedding. Or did you know that you can rent an aisle runner carpet?

There are quite a few “green” alternatives to fabric aisle runners such as petals, sand, shells, rocks, ribbon, or live potted plants as a runner ‘outline’. If you use ribbon as an aisle runner outline, consider donating the ribbon afterward to a local school’s art room.  If you use live potted plants, consider moving them to the reception area after the ceremony is finished for added decoration there, and/or giving them away as guest favors.

As you can probably tell, there are hundreds of things to consider. It’s also up to couples to decide for themselves how much “green” they want to incorporate into their celebration. Whether they choose to include a few eco-friendly ideas or to create an entire “green” wedding, that’s a personal decision. Stay tuned for part 2, and for the availability of the entire eBook later this month.
