Emily Browne Gets Inked
By Dawn Bonner

Emily Browne wondered where to start. She called her tattooed friend, Tasha, for advice.

“I’m getting inked,” relayed Emily Browne enthusiastically.

Tasha warned Emily Browne to slow down and do her homework. According to Tasha there could be many dangers to Emily Browne’s health if she was careless in picking her artist.

“Oh dear,” said Emily Browne, “I had no idea this was so serious.”

“You need to be careful. There are a lot of unskilled people out there. “Scratchers” don’t always follow the Code of Practice. They haven’t apprenticed with a master tattoo artist, they are self-taught. So, if you don’t know what you don’t know, you won’t ask the right questions. Blood borne pathogens aren’t your every day kind of talk. In the tattoo world, this should be basic, must-have knowledge, to prevent your from getting Hepatitis C or any other horrible things,” Tasha replied.

Tasha said she watched her artist do a tattoo on someone else. This assured her the Code of Practice was followed to the T.

Emily Browne followed Tasha’s advice and did her due diligence in finding the best artist in town. She made a check list of each important issue and was able to find a reputable inker.

The time had finally arrived. Emily Browne was in the chair of the artist and ready to decide upon the art to be proudly displayed on her skin.

So many ideas and so little skin thought Emily Browne as she looked at all of the possibilities.

Emily Browne saw Mickey Mouse and thought it would look adorable on the top of her cleavage peeking out at everyone.

She shared this with her skilled technician and he said there may be some better choices.

“Weight loss and gravity will make Mickey look like he is tall, thin and distorted, not short, plump and cute,” he said.

Mickey Mouse suddenly didn’t look as cute as she first thought. The artist’s observations made Emily Browne project into the future.

How would a grandma look with Mickey on her breast? Somehow, Mickey on her anywhere at that age just sounded…well, not like art.

“How about the tummy?” she said.

“Are you going to have children??” he said.

“Are you making a pass at me?” she said.

“No, no pass. This is a valid question. If you are planning on having children, tats on the tummy can be tough. It may not make it through the pregnancy looking good. The weight gain and weight loss is so fast that it can negatively affect the tat,” he said.

Even though she was done having children, it did make her think about weight gain, muscle loss, those puffy days where she felt pregnant and decided there must be another way to have a tattoo stay in ‘shape’ even if she didn’t.

She finally decided on a good old American icon — a Harley Davidson tattoo — something that she dearly loved. She also decided on her lower back because even if it dropped a bit with age, it wouldn’t go down as far as other body parts…

Now that decisions had been made and she was comfortable about her safety, she was ready to get on with it.

The tattooist prepped her, ran the stencil, and put some topical on her for a bit of numbing. He got the inks out and arranged.

The skin was ready to take the color. She heard a noise and then all of a sudden, a bit of pain. Not too bad, she thought. About 45 minutes later, it was hurting a bit more.

OMG-Emily Browne thought she was going to fly to the ceiling. He was going by her spine and it hurt to all heck. She wanted to run out of the room, but it was too late. She had to let him finish.

It took a total of three hours and it felt like he was taking a knife and carving her up. Emily Browne didn’t think she would ever do this again.

The tattooist went over the after care and impressed upon Emily Browne that the after care is as important as the sanitation during the procedure itself. He stressed to use only A&D ointment, no Vaseline or lotions as they would affect the colors of her new ink job.

A week later, her Harley riding beau said he thought it was really HOT. Hmm, thought Emily Browne, maybe I could get another one.
